We're in the final stretch. For all the work of over 450 community members, Prosperity 2012 has much good to show. The best part is that there is so much already in motion...we have achieved our goal of galvanizing lots of people and organizations to take actions that meaningfully improve the economy!

The Target of Opportunity industries still offer the greatest opportunity for our residents. They have outperformed the rest of the regional economy through the Recession. And they are generating new businesses at a remarkable rate. Entrepreneurship is strong here. (The full report is attached below.)
That's what we (Dennis Mullins, the Labor Market Information Specialist from the California Employment Development Department, who mined the economic data for the report and I) found when we analyzed the industry, new firm and occupational data for this update.

I am so impressed to see a "pre-fab" home be so beautiful. The new Sunset Magazine Breezehouse in Healdsburg, CA is design-savvy, green as they come, and features a Redwood deck. Sunset's purpose seems to be showing us how we can have a home with beauty, light, strength and low costs to the environment and our pocket-books. Humboldt Redwood Company and California Redwood Company donated the deck as a part of the Redwood Marketing Campaign, sponsored by Humboldt County Economic Development and the Headwaters Fund.

"The whole purpose is becoming the place that successful business people want to be, come and stay. If we build a nurturing business climate, the jobs will flow," explained Ginger Weber, President of Premier Financial Group and member of the Industry Leader Council.

Digging into the data on Building & Systems Construction has shown me an industry full of surprises. This industry certainly has restructured as a result of the recession (lost firms at -12. 8%, but less than the regional average of -15.5%), but, wow!, it has continued to grow jobs significantly (+21.9%, compared to the regional loss of -6.1% jobs) in the 15 year period (1995-2009). Real wages also grew faster (+9.5%) than the regional average (+6.7%) so that the average annual pay at $38,393 is nearly 29% above the regional average of $29,794.

When the Silicon Valley consulting firm, Collaborative Economics, first analyzed our economy and identified the Targets of Opportunity industries for the WIB, they called our Niche Manufacturing industry cluster the “Rock Stars”.

125 Humboldt citizens, community leaders and business owners participated in the launch of Prosperity 2012 on Friday. It was standing room only! You can see photos and a quick video at our community Facebook page: NorthCoast Prosperity. We learned that our Internet broadband access is actually better than Redding! But given how long it took me to upload this little video, there is still work to be done to reach ubiquitous broadband and play at a global pace.
